NeCEN is managed and operated by a team of scientists with different roles and specialties.

In addition, several local research groups are closely affiliated with NeCEN, in particular, from the Institute of Biology at Leiden University (Ariane Briegel) and the Leiden University Medical Centre (Bram Koster, Meindert Lamers, Thom Sharp, Montse Barcena and Roman Koning).
