Leiden Mayor visits NeCEN

The Netherlands Center for Electron Nanoscopy (NeCEN) welcomed Henri Lenferink, the Mayor of Leiden. Lenferink showed great interest in the services NeCEN provides, especially for corporations.

Bram Koster, professor at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and scientific director of NeCEN, explained how NeCEN is preparing for more collaborations with companies. Next to setting up further projects with industry, NeCEN is aware of the increasing need for cryo-EM expertise and will offer courses.

Ariane Briegel, professor at the Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL), presented data she collected at NeCEN to highlight the advantages of cryo-Electron Microscopy in research.

Lenferink got a tour of the facility and was also shown the new location of NeCEN at the Beta Campus next door. The Mayor was interested in the process of data collection and was introduced to the sample preparation lab to see how a sample is cryogenically frozen. Of course, he also got to see a Titan Krios microscope and was shown a processed image of a virus and oxygen transporters from the blood from data collected at NeCEN.

NeCEN is happy with the support from the Mayor of Leiden and to be part of the Leiden Bio Science Park. Companies interested to hear more about the possibilities at NeCEN are welcome to visit. Please send an email to necen@biology.leidenuniv.nl or call 071-5271421.
