A large-volume sample preparation pipeline to be installed at NeCEN.

On 28 July it was announced that Ariane Briegel, Professor of Ultrastructural biology and NeCEN co-director, will receive a 800,000 euro grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

The grant will go towards setting up a large-volume sample preparation pipeline at NeCEN. The new instrumentation will include a high-pressure freezer, cryo-ultramicrotome and light-microscope with cryo-stage. Together with the Aquilos focussed ion-beam system already present at NeCEN, the new equipment will form a state-of-the-art pipeline for preparation of cells and tissues for cryo-electron tomography. The new instruments will be available to users and will expand NeCEN's capabilities as center of excellence for cryo-electron tomography. Installation of the new equipment is expected in September 2020.
